Argentina increases the capabilities of its AMHS

With the final acceptance approval of ICAO and becoming operational in December 2005, the aeronautical messaging system in Argentina became one of the first extended service systems based on the new ICAO ATN standard for ground to ground messaging.

The results shown by the system have lead ICAO and the Argentinean aeronautical administration to decide on Radiocom to continue the development of the ATN network by adding a training center (in CIPE) in 2007 and further two AMHS nodes in the first half of 2008, one in Cordoba and the other in Comodoro Rivadavia.

AMHS (Air Traffic Service Message Handling System) defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to replace the existing legacy AFTN systems currently in use by most aeronautical administrations worldwide, is the new standard for ground to ground messaging in the aviation industry being is based on the recognized X.400 messaging standard.

Ground to ground messaging systems are used by aeronautical administrations to exchange information including meteorological charts, flight information bulletins and AIPs (Aeronautical Information Publications), all them crucial to the security and safety of national and international air traffic.

Radiocom, Inc was chosen as the supplier after an international competition and their solution was based on software components developed by Skysoft Argentina S.A., a fully owned subsidiary and by UK software house, ISODE.

Commenting on successful acceptance tests back in 2005, Mr. Francisco A. Turconi as president of Radiocom, Inc. said:

“We are very pleased by being selected by ICAO because of the features built into our system and not only by the offered price. These successful acceptance tests as well as the tests carried out during the bidding process not only allows us to demonstrate the maturity of our product, but it is also the best way to honor ICAO’s confidence in our company”

Steve Kille, CEO of Isode Limited added:

“We’re very pleased to have been able to assist Radiocom, Inc. with this ground breaking and important deployment. We believe that this deployment will be used as a model for future AMHS deployments in Latin America and worldwide".

The new nodes to be deployed in the first half of 2008 that will complement the argentine AMHS are composed of a Message Transfer Agent (MTA), a Message Store (MS) and a Directory Server (DS) each so it will enable enhanced load balancing and full redundancy, thus making the system one of the most advanced and full featured systems worldwide.

Another milestone to be achieved by the system will be the interconnection of X.400 P1 MTA and X.500 Directory (in Ezeiza) to the system provided by Radiocom in Asunción, Paraguay.

It is expected to be carried out during February 2008 using the South American REDDIG network.

A further interconnection with Brazil is expected later in 2008, building by this way a Mercosur AMHS region and the biggest AMHS environment worldwide.
